In high schools across the United States, student bodies are not only composed of students but organized by a group known as STUCO, or Student Council. This program, present in various grade levels and schools, is a special initiative formed by students from a specific or collective grade level. These students unite from diverse perspectives within the school system to coordinate activities and enhance students’ social and academic lives. STUCO is not limited to high schools; it extends to middle schools and elementary schools as well. This program has been recognized for enhancing students’ leadership and followership skills, providing a foundation for those who aspire to take on such roles in life. It also contributes to improved classroom management from a young age, fostering skills that can transition into work and future life.
At Upper St. Clair High School, the STUCO program is embraced with pride and implemented from an early age, starting as early as Boyce, the middle school. Led by teachers, the program guides students to make decisions beneficial to the greater student body. STUCO at Upper St. Clair holds responsibilities such as planning dances (Homecoming, Prom, and Sadies) and organizing activities like the annual Pickle Ball, Volleyball, and Basketball Tournaments.
Lylah Kateeb, a Student Council member at Upper St. Clair High School, provides insight into the election process and STUCO responsibilities: “Well, we set up activities around the school and we promote them, we approve clubs, we set up the big events and dances. In every grade level, 18 people are elected from freshmen to junior year. Juniors organize Sadies, and seniors take Homecoming; everything else, all grade levels work together.” Lylah emphasizes the STUCO process, the election of members from each grade, and the distribution of responsibilities among grade levels, providing a unique perspective on handling events for the entire student body.
Isabella Donnelley, another Student Council member, comments on the structure of STUCO, stating, “STUCO is when students come together to talk about things and share ideas for activities going on in the school. We vote on projects and dances, etc., and overall try to make the activities fun for students participating.” Through this perspective, the student body gains insight into the thoughtful planning that goes into each event organized not only by the school but also by STUCO representatives. Events such as dances, fundraisers, organizations, and clubs are all meticulously considered by student representatives.
Moreover, the Student Council program has proven to be a success in schools throughout our district and the United States. At Upper St. Clair High School, STUCO plays a significant role in shaping and representing the needs of the student body from various perspectives. The school takes pride in its representatives and the concerted effort behind the thoughtful planning of each event.
